• the top section shows result of "Auto-Contrast" command
applied to the unaltered original...

• the bottom section shows the "Auto-Levels" command
applied to the unaltered original...

I have no explanation for this, and am now unable to reproduce the results in CS5...
anyway, another "Happy Accident"...
